Just the phrase ‘Gap Year’ is bursting with untold potential. The possibilities for far-flung travel, emotional highs and great personal growth are literally endless and for those with a genuine sense of adventure and a deep longing to engage with the spirit of Africa, From Here 2 Timbuktu can offer an unparalleled experience.

We have a couple of sought-after positions each year open to Gap Year students of under 25 years of age. Young people who wish to join us need to:

  • Pay €1950 to cover all your transport for all trips.
  • Budget a further €30 per day to cover food and accommodation expenses.
  • Be free to join us on a Sahara Overland trip in September or December or fly out to another African destination as required.

In return, you will have the experience of a lifetime. You will taste the all wonderful essences of African life from the inside out, not as a tourist in an aloof, gated resort. You will learn how to deal with real Africans of all kinds, from busy officials who can greenlight your passage, to locals who simply want to get to know you better. You will help see to the needs of follower travellers, carrying and loading luggage, helping to dig out the truck should it get stuck in the sand of the Sahara – this is a hands-on role for real adventurers with a positive, can-do attitude.

You may get sent ahead of the group of travellers to prepare for its arrival. Whatever your specific duties – they vary from trip to trip - you are sure to learn greater independence, gain in confidence and pick up a whole new range of skills and talents, from speaking French to cooking in the desert. A Gap Year starting with us may even be just the first step towards your very own solo adventure elsewhere Africa, where we’ll always be just a phone call or email away. Read on for what is hopefully an utterly inspirational account of how a Gap Year in Africa may change your life forever…
